DEAR FRIENDS OF “NEW WAYS IN EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION”, TODAY’S PROGRAM GUEST IS LAURA FRADE RUBIO, DOCTOR IN EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY AND EXPERT IN EVALUATION BY COMPETENCIES. SHE WILL GIVE US AN OVERVIEW OF EDUCATIONAL RUBRICS, THEIR USE AND RELEVANCE FOR EVALUATION. WELCOME, LAURA!
Thank you. I am honored. To begin with, I can say that rubrics are ways to spell out as clearly as possible what we evaluate and how we are doing that. For that purpose, we define what the relevant criteria are and the description of three or four different levels of performance.
WHO GET THE BENEFITS OF DESIGNING A RUBRIC?
Everybody involved in the educational process, from stake holders to heads of department, teachers and students. When learners know what is expected from them and how they can recognise how well they have achieved it, they take more control of their own learning and so their motivation improves. Hence, they also learn to be better critics of their own and others’ work.
WITH A GOOD RUBRIC, THEN, IT IS NOT A MYSTERY ANYMORE WHAT COUNTS TO GET GOOD MARKINGS.
That’s right, and that knowledge empowers the learners.
HOW DO YOU DESIGN A RUBRIC?
Initially, I decide what I want to evaluate: whether it is a learning process or an outcome in which case I use formative or summative evaluation. Rubrics will change accordingly, since generally they are holistic for the former and analytical latter. This is not a hard rule, just a tendency.
Either holistic or analytical rubrics, they have to distinguish between different degrees of achievement and to clearly describe the difference between them. Each degree will correspond to a specific score. So students can have a pretty accurate idea of what exactly they have to do perform better.
ARE THERE ONLINE TOOLS TO DESIGN EDUCATIONAL RUBRICS?
I am happy you ask that! Yes, there is a site I can recommend: the tool net Rubi Star.
WELL, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR COMING, DOCTOR LAURA FRADE RUBIO, TO TODAY’S PROGRAM OF “NEW WAYS IN EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION”. GOOD BYE.
Bye.
